These wasps come in a variety of colors, including black and yellow and black and white. The yellowjacket is 5/8 inch to 1 inch in length and has a narrow waist. Yellowjackets are the most aggressive wasps when it comes to protecting their nests. Yellowjackets, like all wasps, are attracted to a wide range of insects and arthropods. Yellowjackets also like to eat sweets and meats. After one summer, the queens will leave to start a new colony.
Yellowjackets nest in the ground but they will nest in railroad ties and wall voids. Most yellow jackets feed on insects in spring. Foraging workers can be a nuisance when wasp colonies reach their greatest size in the fall. while they hunt for food. A sting is temporary and usually only feels painful for most people. An allergic person may experience a severe reaction that requires medical attention.
